Tenaya Great Danes are owned by Helen Seddon who is committed to health screening breeding stock and breeding top quality puppies that will make excellent pets and show dogs.

As a serious hobby breeder I only breed occasional litters and do not make money from my Danes. All decisions are based on what is best for the bitch and her puppies.

TENAYA GREAT DANES SUPPORT
THE LUPA PROJECT

The LUPA project is a Europe-wide association of vets and geneticists investigating genetic diseases of dogs and people. Research into dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM, known as one of the most common heart diseases in Great Danes) is being carried out at Liverpool University. They have already screened over 70 Great Danes.
DCM is a disease of the heart causing enlargement of the heart and poor pumping ability resulting in heart failure. In order to continue vital research they need to screen Great Danes 5 years or older . The screening at Liverpool University is FREE OF CHARGE, carried out by highly qualified Vets and includes

A Full Clinical Examination
A Full Heart Scan (no sedation required)
An ECG and possibly 24 hour ECG monitor
A Blood Sample to screen for diseases of older dogs

This research has received generous funding from the Great Dane Breed Council and the Kennel Club Charitable Trust in order to continue screening more Great Danes. The research is attempting to determine the gene(s) responsible so that affected dogs with this inherited disease can be diagnosed before they are used for breeding.
